There is, of course, one fundamental difference between a mechanical kaleidoscope and a human kaleidoscope. Our challenge is to grow stronger in our broken places, and to not allow our inner hurts to prevent us from being positive and cheerful on the outside. We all have our own little pieces of shattered glass: lost loved ones, dying dreams and career disappointments, mental and physical health problems, and a whole lot more, tumbling around inside of us. The inner workings of a kaleidoscope are comprised of pieces of shattered glass that, when tumble together and viewed through a prism, form beautiful patterns. Our challenge is the channel these changes into a positive direction so that we grow as individuals and increase our contribution as citizens. Over the course of a lifetime, we will change careers, relationships, and lifestyles, and in the process change ourselves. Over the course of a day, we each go through a series of different activities, energy highs and lows, and mood swings. Our challenge is to meld these disparate parts of our “self” into the person we are meant to be.Ī kaleidoscope is constantly changing, creating new patterns and designs. We humans are all a crazy quilt patchwork of strengths and weaknesses, memories and dreams, hopes and fears – always in pairs, never one without the other. Just one, or only a few, of those colors alone could be bland and boring it is the profusion of colors that creates the beauty. It occurs to me that while that is a great metaphor for healthcare organization, it can also be a beautiful metaphor for an individual person.Ī kaleidoscope brings together a whole spectrum of colors to create an image that can be breathtakingly beautiful. The name Kaleida is derived from the word kaleidoscope. Last week I had the privilege of speaking at a leadership event for 300 members of the management team at Kaleida Health, an 11,000-person health system serving western New York. You are a kaleidoscope – make the effort to make your life’s patterns beautiful and interesting
